SH 71 U-Turn Relocation Plan

The 183 South Project involves constructing a new tolled expressway with three lanes in each direction in middle of an eight-mile section of US 183 between US 290 and SH 71. The project includes new non-tolled general purpose lanes and direct connection ramps between the tolled expressway and SH 71. As part of the design of the SH 71 ramps, the construction contractor, Colorado River Constructors, recommended the closure and relocation of the westbound to eastbound U-turn, or turnaround, on SH 71 near the intersection with US 183 near The Parking Spot and Gatti’s Pizza. The closure enhances safety and traffic flow on SH 71. Traffic is now routed to the U-turn at Riverside Drive.

This U-turn was permanently closed on June 26, 2017. In advance of the closure, a neighborhood meeting was held (August 3, 2016 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm) to present this proposal to the community and provide an opportunity for public input. Six members of the public attended, and no opposition to the closure was given.

Colorado River Constructors’ recommendation was formally approved by the Texas Department of Transportation, and the permanent closure took place Monday, June 26, 2017, at 9 am.
