The 183 South Project will be implemented using the “design/build” delivery method. This means a single company is responsible for both the final design and construction of the project. This approach helps expedite completion of the project by allowing the design/build firm to start some elements of construction while roadway design is still ongoing.
On May 27, 2015, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority’s Board of Directors awarded its largest design/build contract to date to Colorado River Constructors (CRC) for $581.5 million. CRC is a team of design and engineering consultants led by Fluor Corporation and Balfour Beatty Construction.
Construction along the eight-mile stretch of US 183 began in April 2016, and is expected to last just over four years. The construction will take place in phases. Phase I improvements, between US 290/290 Toll and north of Bolm Road, is expected to be complete in 2019. Phase II will open to traffic about a year later.
